Beginning a new year knowing there’s much more.

Knowing Jesus and accepting his words and following his thoughts is an experience of a great freedom from your own self.

It’s like knowing that life is not about you. Your reputation is not important. You can laugh about yourself and let others do the same... you can be humiliated and it isn’t a big deal. Discovering that you are not the best and that you do not come first does not really matter, when you understand what Jesus is saying. Wow, what freedom!

This new year I’m starting it knowing that there’s so much more to discover and the more I discover what Jesus has to say the more I realise he is so right. If I had ever said that before I know now that it never had the weight that it has today.

As I grow older, I may not look much holier as most people define it. I may look more foolish though. Following the Lord has to make you look foolish in the eyes of the “wise”, those who think that they understand today’s world. But this foolishness has a freedom that you’ll give everything for.

And that’s what I want. I want to be free, free from myself. I want to follow the Lord, wherever he takes me. I want to let his Word transform me. I want this truth to prove that the world is wrong and so is our understanding of ourselves. I want to be free from myself, or as Paul puts it, free from the old self.

You may discover that you are small, so ordinary. And that’s a gift, because only then you recognise that you are truly free, as you have nothing to protect and nothing to prove. Then you also discover that all you are is connected to God. You already know your value. And nothing will change that.

I’m starting this new year knowing things I never knew before. So I’m not the same. And I’m sure that this coming year will be better cause by the end of it I shall not be where I stand today.
