Baptism takes away Original Shame

We talk about the sin of Adam and Eve and we call it Original Sin. We often forget that before that, there was the Original Blessing. But if we read well the reading of the fall of our forefathers, the first experience of “sin” was more about shame. Adam and Eve hid because they were shy of their nakedness. That’s funny! They were naked earlier, since the beginning of their existence. Being naked was never a problem. It was never meant to be one. But their fall in the serpent’s temptation to be like God made them see what they were not supposed to see and understand. And so Original Sin can be easily called Original Shame.

God walked daily in the garden with His creatures but that day He could not find them. He called Adam and Eve, but discovered that they were shy to come out because they were naked. God asked them a very important question: Who told you that you are naked? Then, like a good mother, God came down and the first thing he did was to sow some clothes for them. He covers their nakedness, their shame.

This came to my mind as I was thinking about baptism at Easter Vigil and what it does in us. We were always taught that in baptism God takes away the Original Sin. So baptism takes away our shame as well. It’s the shame that entered when (after eating the forbidden fruit) we realised we were naked. That’s the day when we started comparing things: who’s naked and who’s clothed; who’s worthy and who’s unworthy; who’s good and who’s bad; who’s better than others; who’s holier or not; who’s in and who’s out. Jesus came to show us the truth about ourselves. He came to tell us that there’s no one better than another. We’re all the same in God’s eyes. We’re all children of God, even though we’re sinners. We just need to accept that nakedness the way God accepts it without any problem. So He is just inviting us to see differently now, to take away that shame and see in the way God sees.

But seeing differently requires a total change of vision. We need to let go our old way of seeing ourselves and others, and God and life. A change of sight requires our ego to die so that it will not give us a one-way of seeing things: our way, that of right or wrong, good or bad, naked or clothed. This change is what Paul tells us to do in baptism: to let our old self (ego) die with Christ so that Christ lives in us (Rom. 6:4). Paul tells us to renew our way of thinking (Rom. 12.2).

It’s not the water that will do this to us at baptism, but a total transformation in Christ, a new way of thinking. It’s a journey that will take us back to the time when there was no shame of who we are, as it was meant to be by the Creator. We’re all called to do that journey. Changing our way of seeing will transform our way of being. It will take away our shame.

  1. 1. Would you be so kind and quote scripture as to where does it say that Baptism takes away our original sin?

    2. Also please can you quote biblical scripture that says even while we are still sinners we are children of God?

Another thing why do I see no message of repentance here?

    Thanks

  3. INFANT BAPTISM?

Is infant baptism a Biblical practice? Is infant baptism in agreement with Scripture?

Acts 2:38 Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (NASB)

Infants cannot repent because they do not understand the meaning of repentance nor do they comprehend water baptism. Infants have no sins that need to be forgiven. Infants are not sinners. Infants do not need to repent nor do they need to be baptized.

Only comprehending adults are guilty of sin.

James 1:14-15 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and entice by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.(NASB)

Infant cannot be tempted to sin. Infants are not enticed by their own lusts. Infants do not get drunk and commit fornication. Infant to not commit armed robbery. Infants do not murder. Infants are not sinners.

1 John 3:4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.(NASB)

Infants do not practice sin. Infants do not break God's laws. Infants are not sinners.

Acts 22:16 Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His, name!(NASB)

Infants are not capable of getting up and being baptized, they cannot even understand the command. Infants cannot call on the name of the Lord.

Acts 8:34-38.....36.....What prevents me from being baptized?" 37 [And Philip said , "If you believe with all your heat, you may." And he answered and said , "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God."]....

Infant cannot believe nor can they confess Jesus as the Christ the Son of God. Infants cannot meet the requirements for water baptism. Infant are prevented from being baptized.

Acts 31:30-34 and after he brought them out, he said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" 31 They said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." 33...and immediately he was baptized, he and all his household......34 having believed in God with his whole household.(NASB)

The jailer had to believe and be baptized to be saved. The jailer did not believe for his household. The jailer was not baptized for his household. Everyone in his household believed before they were baptized. Infants cannot believe, there were no unbelieving infants baptized. Believing always precedes water baptism.

Mark 16:16 He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.(NASB)

The jailer and his household were saved just as Jesus said in Mark 16:16, they believed and were baptized. Infant cannot believe nor can they consent to be baptized. Infant are not lost, only sinners are lost.

John 8:24 'Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins."(NASB)

If you take the position that infants are guilty of sin; then you have to believe that if infants die before they believe that Jesus is the Christ, and the Son of God that infants will die in their sins.

    Infants are not sinners.
Infants do not qualify for baptism.
    Infants are not lost.
Infants who die without baptism will not go to hell.
Infants who die without believing in Jesus will not go to hell.
Infants who are aborted will not go to hell.
